Wild Felid Legacy Scholarship
Offered by
The Wild Felid Research and Management Association (WFA)

Information on applying for the 2010 Wild Felid Legacy Scholarship, click here

In 2009, as the result of generous donations, the Wild Felid Research and Management Association created a new scholarship to encourage and support a graduate-level university student involved in wild felid research. The scholarship is offered in honor of four distinguished and dedicated biologists who lost their lives while seeking to understand and conserve wildlife, including wild felids.

  • Ian Ross (1958-2003), a Canadian biologist who studied a variety of large carnivores, including pumas.

  • Rocky Spencer (1952-2007), a biologist with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, was dedicated to studying pumas and educating the public on how to coexist with them.

  • Eric York (1970-2007), a researcher and field biologist experienced in handling felids such as snow leopards and pumas.

  • Dave Maehr (1956- 2008), professor at the Univ. of Kentucky and former Panther Team Leader for the Florida Game and Freshwater Fish Commission

PURPOSE OF THE FUND
The Wild Felid Legacy Scholarship provides financial aid to a graduate-level university student conducting research on wild felids. The scholarship was awarded in the summer of 2009. Applications were evaluated based on: demonstrated need for financial aid; participation in a research project that aims to improve our understanding of wild felid biology, management and/or conservation; and undergraduate and graduate GPA. The Wild Felid Legacy Scholarship is presently a one-time scholarship but the WFA board of directors hopes that future donations will enable us to offer the scholarship annually.

2009 RECIPIENTS

Congratulations to Lucrecia Masaya and Ashwin Naidu, the 2 recipients of the Wild Felid Legacy Scholarship for 2009.

We had a group of 15 exceptional candidates, making the decision very difficult. More information about all 15 candidates can be found in the July 2009 issue of the Wild Felid Monitor, or click here.
